Austria rejects Afghanistan's request to halt deportations of asylum seekers for 3 months

Today, Monday, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg affirmed his country's rejection of the Afghan government's objection to the deportation of Afghan refugees to their country.

Schallenberg said - in a statement today - that Austria completely rejects the Afghan government's call to suspend deportations for 3 months due to the current crisis.

The minister explained that despite the withdrawal of international forces, Austria will not turn its back on Afghanistan, but the refugee file has a special status, noting that the European Union will remain one of the largest supporters and financiers of Afghanistan.

He said that Europe cannot remain under pressure from other countries on immigration issues, pointing out that Austria and many European countries are only deporting asylum seekers to Afghanistan.
