Russian officials discuss with the UN envoy the Syrian settlement

On Sunday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and Special Representative of the Russian President Alexander Lavrentiev held a session of talks with the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, on the Syrian settlement.

The ministry indicated - in a statement reported by "Russia Today" channel - that "a detailed exchange of views took place on the current situation in Syria, with emphasis on the importance of strengthening the political process led and implemented by the Syrians themselves with the help of the United Nations," noting that the two sides stressed the necessity of Providing comprehensive humanitarian aid to Syria in accordance with the rules of international humanitarian law and the resolutions of the Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly.

Last April, the UN envoy said that pivotal international diplomats are interested in intensifying international diplomatic efforts to make progress towards ending the crisis in Syria, noting that "there is a need for more comprehensive and constructive diplomacy to make progress towards resolving the crisis that is witnessing significant internationalization with senior officials from a number of countries, including Russia, America, Turkey, Iran, the Arab world and Europe."
